The first serious attempt to propagate Christianity among the Muslims of India appears to have been made during the reign of Akbar. At his invitation representatives of all religions assembled at the Royal court at Agra. It thus came about that the Portuguese Jesuits at Goa sent, at intervals, three separate missions to the Great Moghal. The first of these, 1580, was withdrawn in 1583, having accomplished nothing. A similar fate attended the second. The third arrived in Lahore where the court then was, in 1595, is notable for the fact that at its head was Jerome Xavier. From a letter written by Xavier, in 1604, we learn that in that year more than forty converts from Islam received Holy Communion in the Ara Church. The mission was withdrawn in 1605.
Like this the Muslims and Christians who invaded India have preached their faiths to Indians and thus put their foundation stone for conversion.
