It was a grand homecoming that not only reiterated her position in the ruling AIADMK, but also reinforced the fact that she will remain a force to reckon with in Tamil Nadu politics. When AIADMK leader J Jayalalithaa landed in Chennai at 5pm on Saturday, the slogans that rent the air and the frenzy with which she was greeted were an indication of the sway she holds over her party. As her convoy weaved through the arterial road from the airport to her Poes Garden residence, hysterical partymen and women surged towards her vehicle all along the 15km route.Despite the legal setback in the disproportionate assets case, her return home was akin to a victory march.
Jayalalithaa walked free on Saturday 18-10-14 after spending 21 days in Parappana Agrahara central jail in Bangalore since September 27, when she was convicted and sentenced to four years imprisonment by a special court. She and three other convicts were granted bail by the Supreme Court on Friday. From early morning on Saturday , thousands of AIADMK supporters started thronging the jail and Chennai airport.
As soon as her lawyers submitted two local sureties, the special court judge issued release orders around 11.30am. AIADMK state secretary Pugazhendi immediately took the order to the jail. By then, police had turned the jail into a fortress as hundreds of party supporters arrived to catch a glimpse of their leader. AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa stepped out of the prison at 3.05pm. Tamil Nadu chief minister O Panneerselvam fell at her feet while 30 ministers and MLAs greeted her with folded hands.
However, Jayalalithaa did not speak a word and sat silently in her vehicle, greeting jail officials with folded hands. Immediately, a 15-vehicle convoy zoomed towards the old airport, where a special plane was waiting. Jayalalithaa’s supporters, most of them women, gathered along the route, celebrating her release.
A host of senior officials, including Tamil Nadu director general of police (law and order) K Ramanujam, DGP (state intelligence) Ashok Kumar, Chennai police commissioner S George, inspec tor general of police P Kannappan, chief secretary Mohan Verghese Chunkath and state home secretary Apurva Varma greeted Jayalalithaa on arrival at Chen nai airport.
Thousands of AIADMK cadres were waiting outside the airport to welcome their leader. As a result, traffic movement on GST Road lead ing to the airport was affected. Jayalalithaa’s SUV emerged from the airport’s VIP gate No. 6 at 5pm. She was seated in the front and her aide Sasikalaa and her niece Elavarasi were in the back.
The party workers, who had been waiting for Jayalalithaa on roadsides since morning braving the heavy rain, shouted “Amma… Amma“ as her convoy proceeded towards Poes Garden. Jayalalithaa acknowledged her supporters’ cheers with a smiling face and folded hands.
Hundreds of flexboards were erected all through the route leading from the airport to Guindy hailing her as the true leader of Tamil Nadu. Party cadres were found fixing party flags along the road around 11am. Her convoy slowed down at various places along the route as onlookers and party supporters waved out to her. Please see the short video.
